Committee membership is generally a short-term commitment to the program and are a great way to help if you want to help but feel like you cannot contribute throughout the entire year. If you have questions about any of the committees please e-mail one of the directors.
BAND BANQUET:
Typically, the vice-president makes arrangements for the annual banquet which is held in May each year. Students receive letters, bars, and awards (both “real” and “fun”) during a program including memories of the year by the directors. The Seniors present their parting gift(s). Prior to the program, there is a potluck dinner that is open to everyone.
CHAPERONES:
Chaperones accompany students to competitions, contests, and other scheduled events as needed. Two parents are needed per bus to call roll and enforce bus rules. Chaperones receive free admission to the competitions and are expected to help with front line and equipment during the show and when the school truck arrives and departs at the competition site. Help may also be needed at the uniform trailer.
CONCERT BAKE SALES:
For West High band concerts we hold a free-will donation bake sale. These are always popular with the audience, and the funds go to a good cause, of course. This person organizes and watches the table before (30 minutes) and after (15 minutes) the concert and also watches the donation box.
CONCESSIONS:
Boosters sell concessions during the Winter Sports season. All proceeds go directly to the Boosters Club to support the annual expenses associated with the Marching Band Program and band trips. Our Marching Program is subsidized by the Boosters at $5,000.00+ each year! Funds built up for trip years help defray costs for individual students and provide scholarships so that all students may participate. Concessions are a very important fundraiser.
FRONT LINE CREW:
The Front Line Crew assists the Front Line students in moving their ensemble of instruments and equipment onto the field. Volunteers are needed at each football game and marching band contest to assist the students.
FUNDRAISING:
This committee functions as a general fundraising and service committee. This committee plans “short-term/quick” fundraising events such as bake sales, pizza nights, SCRIP, and Younkers and Hy-Vee coupon book sales. We are always looking for creative and innovative ideas to add dollars to the Booster Budget!!
TRAILER/TRANSPORT:
Trailer loading and unloading. The West band debuted their semi-trailer in 19-20! We would like a small crew to be trained in running the hydraulics, maintaining, and helping oversee the loading/unloading process of equipment to marching band events.
UNIFORMS/TRAILER: Jenn Thurm (uniforms)
Uniforms/Trailer is responsible for organizing and fitting uniforms for marching and concert season. This includes trailer work the nights of games and competitions and keeping the band closet organized.
LOCKER FAIRIES: Jenn Thurm
This committee prepares and hangs locker signs for all competitions and events related to band. Signs are hung during the week prior to each event on each students’ locker. We always seek to extend GOOD LUCK to our dedicated student performers. Especially active during the competition season, the activity is significantly less during the remainder of the year but includes Jazz Band, Concerts, and Solo–Small Group/Large Group Contests. Fairies can help when and where they can!
MEMBERSHIP:
Membership chair promotes the membership and support of Band Boosters and prepares membership lists for concert recognition.
MERCHANDISE:
Merchandise selects and sells items to support the band . Items often include t-shirts and sweatshirts and are usually available in the fall. Other merchandise is offered periodically. These items are sold at school athletic events and other pre-approved band events.
SENIOR RECEPTION:
At the final band concert in spring we have a reception for our graduating seniors. We need volunteers to help with cookies/treats, lemonade/punch, decorations, perhaps small remembrances for our seniors.
ENDOWMENT:
The band has an endowment fund; contributions will help to grow the fund in future years. We especially reach out to alumni and the community for contributions; if you can help, please talk to Mr. Dobbs!
